NCLB, RTTT ESSA inequity has always been part of the plan from the beginning

President Franklin Roosevelt said: "The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little.”
Equity is complicated. Inequity is not in my humble opinion. You either have the public will for justice for all, or you don't.
What is wrong with NCLB, RTTT and the ESSA? Of course the testing and standards will save us is all wrong, but it is more complicated than merely the over use of testing.
What is not complicated is every one of Ed Education reform acts is they have come up don't help every child. Education reformers offer false choices, lotteries, and competitions between those with more resources and those with less. Their plans are punitive, they reward some with new buildings, more flexibility, and resources, and leave others with less. Places like Chicago are no different than any other urban or rural community of color. These Education reform solutions only help some. They were planned from the start to only help some. They demand very costly data tracking systems, but offer little in the way of actual help at the classroom level for children in need.
These Ed Reform Acts are like the Titanic. They never had enough life boats for all children. Why were there not enough life boats on the Titanic? They were so sure their boat was unsinkable. After all the were the builders, business leaders, and owners. They were smarter than everyone else. They did not want to spend money on life boats for all, because anything they did would never ever sink!
What is not complicated in my view is they have no plan to end inequity in our public schools. If you have no plan to end inequity than any plan you have is unjust for some. Injustice for some is injustice for all.
My question to policy makers, politicians, and compromises is why can't we have equity for all?
Equity Now,

Notice to the wealthy, the powerful, and the connected your education reform plan have failed FDR's test of progress.

If you are wondering what this walking man is listening to on this day...it's Barry Lane's "Afraid of love" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bqVLkPaDEDI Come July 8, 2016 the coalition of the just shall gather together against the harm done to our children in the name of education reform. We will gather at the Lincoln Memorial to rally, and we will march to the White House. We will not endorse any politicians, we will not cheer Grit and Rigor, we will march for play, art, music, real reading, real writing, physical education, real history, applied science, applied math, student learning choices, and respect for teachers and parents. We need every who can to come join us.

I hear Angels calling the just

A few years ago my dear friend and brother Barry Lane interviewed me at the New England Reading Association conference. It's short about five minutes. The focus of the interview centered around "Does poverty matter? It was in response to Ed Reform claims that poverty does not matter. I love how Barry framed this clip. Humor me watch it before you read this one please?

On March 31, 2000 Senator Paul Wellstone said: "That all citizens will be given an equal start through a sound education is one of the most basic, promised rights of our democracy. ... Our chronic refusal as a nation to guarantee that right for all children…. is rooted in a kind of moral blindness, or at least a failure of moral imagination…. It is a failure which threatens our future as a nation of citizens called to a common purpose… tied to one another by a common bond."

The Just hear Angels calling

On July 8, 2016 at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC the just are gathering to call out the every Presidential Candidate, both political parties, Congress, the Senate, every mayor, every governor, and legislator in the land. A rough estimate of how long Black, Brown and Poor children have waited for that promise of an equal start and sound education.

Some people can't see,
Some people won't see,
Some people don't care,
Some people are part of plan.

Others are too busy,
Others too preoccupied,
Others too busy stealing pennies from the poor,
Others natural born haters,
Others are self absorbed in the vanity of immoral vanity of power.

Just teachers struggle in their classrooms to rise above madness,
Just teachers bear the scorn of the wealthy, powerful and the connected,
Just teachers cry in their dreams for suffering of our most needy children,
Just teachers are walking out,
Just teachers are striking,
Just teachers are speaking up,
Just teachers are standing up,
Just teachers are marching.
Just teachers are gathering.

God sees all,
Knows all,
Judges all.

Someday everyone stands in that court of judgment,
The case of the just is we gave all I had for justice,
We did not do enough,
We could not do enough,
We did not march enough,
We did not speak out enough.
We gave all we had for justice,
Forgive us for our failures.

give us the chance to do it all over,
We'll give more,
Speak up more,
March more,
Sleep less,
Eat less,
Bleed more.

We may fall,
We may stumble,
We will not give up,
For we are the just,
For our hearts are full,
We are our brothers’ keepers,
We are the just,
We are gathering at the Lincoln Memorial in DC,
Our heroes shall rally our souls,
Then we will march from that place where Martin shared his dream to the White House.

We are just teachers,
We are Martin's people,
We are the children of hope,
We have been on the march for justice,
We cannot be defeated,
We are justice marching.

See you in DC,
Jesse The Walking Man Turner

PS Hint the word is all you need is two feet and a willing heart to join these justice angels marching

Justice is never given, it is a call to duty

Benjamin Disraeli said "Justice is truth in action."

Justice calls the just to:
Turn up,
Speak up,
Walk up,
Call up,
Against inequity and injustice in our public schools.
I am going back to DC on July 8 for the Peoples March for Public Education and Social Justice.

I am not some fortunate son,
I was not born with a silver spoon,
I did not attend elite private schools, or universities.
I started working as a delivery boy at the age of ten, and never looked back at idleness,
My name is unimportant,
Any academic titles I have are unimportant,
I do not dine with presidents, Governors, CEOs, Senators, or members of Congress,
I have lobbied legislators for public education and justice for as long as I can remember,
I have no power,
No wealth, or
No influence.
I do have two feet, and a heart for justice.
You might say my feet is my courage.

I know injustice and inequity,
I see them working their dark magic to crush the hope and dreams of our children in our public schools.
Justice calls me to speak up, stand up, and march.
See me marching in DC at the Lincoln Memorial at the Peoples March for Public Education and Social Justice.
Justice is calling all good people to march.
Justice compels us to stand up,
Justice is never given, it is a call to duty.

Someday our children will grow up, and when they ask why were so many silent?
I plan to say I am one of many who were not.
I know why the cage bird sings,
I know justice is a duty, and my feet are already marching.
Please answer the call to duty.
Please consider marching with me in DC on July 8,
Jesse The Walking Man Turner
