The Research Confirms Moral Failure Everywhere

I study the research,

I study best practices,

I study education reforms,

I study policies,

I study the standards,

I analyze and evaluate the data,

People ask what works,

What did I find?

Everything works in Affluent Schools,

Every reform fails in Poor Schools,

Everything fails in an education reform world where we annually spend 23 billion dollars more on wealthy predominantly White Schools than on our Poor mainly Black and Brown schools,

Another 1.9 Billion annually on Standardized High-Stakes Testing data that has failed to change anything in over 100 years.

No Education reforms work without equity,,

No School Choice Policies work without equity,

No new Standards work without equity,

No catchy slogans work without equity work,

Leave No Child Behind, failed,

Race To The Top, failed,

Every Student Succeeds Act failed.

Policymakers point to Finland and other nations,

Say go see what they do.

I say go to our wealthy predominately White Schools,

See how that 23 billion more every year helps,

Then give our poor predominately Black and Brown schools exactly what those rich schools get,

Then we can talk about what works and does not work.

Just Saying,

Dr. Jesse P. Turner

CCSU Literacy Center Director

Uniting to Save Our Schools,

Badass Professor.

    1. In defining Moral Failure, I use the work of Michelle Alexander, The New Jim Crow, in America the roots of inequity in public education go back 200 hundred years before the end of slavery, and have continue 200 years afterwards. Here is a link to a question and answer article with Dr. Alexander.
Thank you for asking for specifics, there are many others, but when a researcher refers to America's public school system as a school to prison pipeline, people should respond.

  19. My thinking, Moral Failure, particularly in literacy is a term researchers steer away from. They are anxious to find silver bullets. I think we need to look to Critical Theory, justice, equity, and liberation open doors to stytemic racism and opressions. CT gets near, but even there the term Moral Failure is shied away from.they look at institutional failures. Moral failure is something research in genral avoids, not that they do not talk failure, but Moral, well that is a variable they can't control. When you at 69, in the education for 45 years, your vision looks deeper than what is written in the books, you examine what was written in our hearts long, long ago. I have no problem calling it what it is.
    Great question Sheetal.
    Peace.
